Kartause Hildesheim

The Carthusian Monastery of Hildesheim, a former monastery of the Carthusian Order, is located in the city of Hildesheim in Lower Saxony. Its history is marked by repeated destruction and reconstruction before it was finally secularized and partly converted for use as a hospital.
History+
The Carthusian monastery “Domus Claustri Beatae Mariae” was founded in 1388 by Bishop Gerhard as an act of gratitude for a military victory. The first monks arrived from Erfurt and initially built the complex outside the city walls on the site of the former Bennoburg. Following a fire in 1522 and looting in 1542 and 1543, which coincided with the introduction of the Reformation in Hildesheim, the monks withdrew. During the Thirty Years' War, the monastery was destroyed again in 1626 and completely demolished in 1632. In the mid-17th century, a new complex was built within the city walls, which was occupied in 1663, and its post-Gothic church was consecrated in 1666. In 1777, the monastery was dissolved; its assets were subsequently used to support the seminary. The buildings were initially used as a seminary and later as a poorhouse.

Today, the 17th-century church, several utility buildings, and the baroque gatehouse of the Carthusian monastery are preserved. The church now serves as the hospital church of St. Bernward Hospital, which was founded in 1852 in the south wing of the secularized Carthusian monastery. Above the gatehouse portal, sculptures of a radiant Madonna, John the Baptist, and Saint Bruno of Cologne can be seen.
