Cologne Charterhouse

The Cologne Charterhouse was founded in 1334 by Archbishop Walram of Jülich, who was familiar with the Carthusians from France and promoted their settlement in the Archdiocese of Cologne. The foundation occurred during a period of mystical piety that led to a flourishing of the order. The first monks moved in in 1335 and began constructing the necessary monastic buildings on the “Sencte Mertinsvelt” in the southern Severinsviertel, where a chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara already existed. Despite initial economic challenges and disputes with the neighboring St. Severin Abbey, which arose from promised but often unfulfilled donations by the archbishop, the Charterhouse managed to establish itself. It grew to become the largest German Carthusian monastery until its dissolution in 1794 during the invasion of French troops.

The former monastery is situated in the city of Cologne, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 53 meters above sea level.

The building complex of the Charterhouse is partially preserved and reconstructed. The Carthusian church has served the Protestant community of Cologne as a place of worship since 1928. The entire complex is protected as a historical monument in North Rhine-Westphalia.
