The Carthusian Monastery of St. Mary was founded in 1396 by the Rostock patricians Winold Baggel and Mathias von Borken, with Baggel's wife, Maria von Borken, also named as a founder. Duke Albrecht III gave his consent on February 27, 1396, and on March 7, 1396, Bishop Rudolf III of Schwerin confirmed the foundation. The bishop granted an indulgence to the monastery, freed it from episcopal jurisdiction, and donated a house in Rostock. The first monks, who came from Carthusian monasteries in Erfurt, Hildesheim, and Eisenach, presumably first resided in this Rostock house before construction of the monastery began in 1398. Over the next 100 years, the monks acquired extensive property, including numerous villages in Mecklenburg and the Principality of Rügen. The Carthusian monastery was dissolved during the Reformation in 1552.

The Carthusian Monastery of St. Mary in Rostock, also known as Marienehe, was the only Carthusian monastery in Mecklenburg. It was located outside the gates of the Hanseatic city of Rostock, in what is now the Schmarl district, and existed from 1396 until its dissolution in 1552. Carthusian monasteries were rare in Northern Germany; at the beginning of the 16th century, out of almost 200 monasteries in the region, only six were located there.
