Kasteel Amerongen is a significant moated castle in the Dutch province of Utrecht, located in the town of Amerongen. Originally built in the Middle Ages, it now stands as an impressive Baroque castle that played an important role in European history.
History+
The origins of Kasteel Amerongen date back to 1286, when a castle was first mentioned in a feudal charter. For centuries, it served as the seat of various noble families, including the Borre family and, from 1557, the van Reede family. Under Godard Adriaan van Reede, the castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style after its destruction by French troops in 1672. Amerongen gained particular historical significance when Emperor Wilhelm II signed his abdication there in November 1918 and lived in exile until 1920, before moving to Huis Doorn.
