Kasteel Bleijenbeek is an impressive castle ruin located in the Afferden district of Bergen in the Dutch province of Limburg. Once a magnificent moated castle, today its preserved outer walls bear witness to its eventful past, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.
History+
The history of Kasteel Bleijenbeek can be traced back to 1405, when it was owned by Wijnand Schenck van Nijdeggen. Martin Schenk von Nideggen, a renowned military leader in Spanish and Dutch service, also resided here. In 1589, during the Eighty Years' War, the castle was occupied by Spanish troops. From 1708, the estate passed into the possession of the Counts of Hoensbroech. During the Kulturkampf in Germany, from 1872, Count Franz Egon von Hoensbroech offered refuge at Bleijenbeek to Jesuits who had been expelled from Germany. Among the residents was the priest-writer Joseph Spillmann, who incorporated the castle's history into his narrative “Das Paradieszimmer”. Tragically, the castle was completely destroyed by bombing in February 1945, with only the outer walls remaining.
