Kasteel Brederode

The remains of the Castle can be visited

Kasteel Brederode, a partially reconstructed castle ruin, is located in the municipality of Velsen in the Netherlands. It is a remarkable testament to medieval architecture and history, nestled in a landscape of coastal dunes and moors.

History+

The origins of Kasteel Brederode date back to the 13th century, with the front buildings presumably constructed between 1225 and 1245 and the main castle built in 1282 under William I of Brederode. In 1351, the castle was besieged and destroyed by Gijsbrecht van Nijenrode. A reconstruction by Dirk III of Brederode took place between 1354 and 1426. However, in the same year, the southern part suffered severe damage from troops from Haalen. After being plundered in 1491 by German soldiers and a fire in 1573, set by Spanish troops, the castle progressively fell into disrepair. Following the death of Johann Wolfart van Brederode in 1679, the ruin passed to the Counts of Holland and later to the Dutch state. From 1862, measures were taken to halt further decay, and by the end of the 19th century, extensive reconstruction began under the direction of A.J. Enschede, largely restoring the ruin to its current state.

The castle ruin Kasteel Brederode is situated southwest of the village of Santpoort in the province of Noord-Holland, in the West-Nederland region of the Netherlands, at an elevation of approximately 8 m above sea level. It lies on a coastal dune that transitions into a moor, surrounded on three sides by this moor, with a river bordering its north.
