Kasteel Doorwerth

The first documented mention of a castle on this site dates back to 1260, when it was besieged and set ablaze by the Lords of Vianen – likely a punishment for brigandage by the Count of Gelre. By 1280, the destroyed complex was replaced by a new residential tower with thick walls and a moat. During the 13th century, the current south wing was added. In 1402, Robert van Dorenweerd sold the castle to Count Reinald IV of Gelre but received it back as a Gelrian fief. A significant expansion into a four-wing complex with an inner courtyard took place in the 15th century, presumably under Knight Reinald van Homoet. The castle acquired its current form around 1560 under Daem Schellart van Obbendorf and Walrave van Voorst. Later additions include the building in the northwest corner and the gatehouse around 1640, as well as the outer bailey and a protective dike. Financial difficulties led to its sale in 1667 to Count Anton I van Aldenburg, whose family rarely used the castle, leading to its gradual decay. In 1837, Jacob Adriaan Prosper van Brakell acquired the property and had it extensively renovated for use as a residence, during which, for example, the neo-Gothic castle chapel was built. After his widow's death, decay set in again until Frederic Adolph Hoefer bought the estate in 1910 and had it restored by 1915. Severely damaged during World War II, Kasteel Doorwerth underwent a lengthy reconstruction until 1983, restoring it to its 18th-century condition. Since 1969, it has been owned by the “Friends of the Castles of Gelderland” foundation.

Kasteel Doorwerth is located in Doorwerth, a district of the municipality of Renkum in the province of Gelderland, in the eastern Netherlands. It stands at an elevation of approximately 9 meters above sea level.

Today, Kasteel Doorwerth houses a museum, offering visitors insights into its rich history and regional culture. The castle is open to the public and invites exploration of its historic rooms.
