Kasteel Hillenraad
Kasteel Hillenraad, a square-plan moated castle, is located in the south of Swalmen in the province of Limburg, Netherlands. Dating back to the 14th century, it has four corner towers.
History+
The first documented mention of the house Hellenrade dates to June 28, 1380. In the 15th century, the complex comprised only the central part of the building. A significant episode occurred in 1572 when William of Orange used the castle as his headquarters for the siege of Roermond. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle underwent expansions, including the addition of the four corner towers. From approximately 1270 to 1695, Swalmen was an independent estate within the Duchy of Guelders, before being elevated to a margraviate with Asselt.

Kasteel Hillenraad remains in private ownership and is not accessible to the public. It is listed as a protected national monument, with the entire complex comprising around twenty individual entries, including the main building, outbuildings, and various park elements.
