Kasteel Hoensbroek
Kasteel Hoensbroek, one of the largest castles in the Netherlands, stands in the Hoensbroek district of Heerlen in the province of Limburg. This impressive moated castle, consisting of a manor house and two outer bailey, is a testament to medieval architecture and later expansions.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the mid-13th century, although only the foundations of the original structure remain today. The oldest surviving part is a round tower on the eastern side of the manor house, construction of which began around 1360. The castle acquired its current form through extensive renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries. For centuries, Kasteel Hoensbroek served as the ancestral seat of the Limburg noble family of Hoensbroech.
