Kasteel Marquette, a historic castle in Heemskerk, North Holland, is an example of Dutch aristocratic culture. Originally built in the 13th century, it served as a crucial part of the defense line against the West Frisians.

History+

The origins of the estate, then known as the House of Heemskerk, date back to the mid-13th century. It was the residence of the Lords of Heemskerk, who ruled over the fiefs of Heemskerk and Castricum. Conflicts with neighboring nobles and farmers were common. In 1358, the castle was besieged by Dirk van Polanden for eleven weeks, leading to Wouter van Heemskerk's surrender. Although the family regained the castle in 1380, the feudal rights were lost.
