Kasteel Rhijnauwen

The origins of the Rhijnauwen estate can be traced back to the 13th century, with the first documented mention of the castle occurring in 1212. In the first half of the 14th century, the structure was rebuilt by the Lords of Lichtenberg. Through the marriage of Aleid van Lichtenberg to John IV of Renesse, ownership passed to the van Zeeland Renesse family. The Strick van Linschoten family acquired Rhijnauwen in 1773 and were the last private owners before the estate was purchased by the city of Utrecht in 1919.
