Kasteel Vaalsbroek (Castle)

The first documented mention of Vaalsbroek dates back to 1420. The country estate, situated in a marshy area by the Gau stream, belonged to the Duchy of Limburg and was owned by various noble families. Its current appearance as a three-winged complex with an extensive English landscape park is thanks to the Aachen textile manufacturer Johann Arnold von Clermont. He acquired the neglected property in 1761 and had it redesigned by the Aachen Baroque architect Johann Joseph Couven. From 1765, Clermont used Vaalsbroek as his main residence, integrating businesses such as a cloth shearing and dyeing facility alongside the living quarters. After his death in 1795, the castle changed hands several times. In 1824, it was sold to the Hasselbach family and later, through marriage, passed to Karl Heinrich von Görschen, who converted it into a grain mill and installed a steam engine. The estate remained in the possession of the von der Mosel family until 1946, before being sold to the civil servants' fund of the Royal Dutch Coal Mines and transformed into a training and education center. Between 1975 and 1980, it was finally converted into the hotel it is today.

Kasteel Vaalsbroek is located in the district of Raren in the municipality of Vaals, in the province of Limburg, Netherlands, at an elevation of approximately 191 meters above sea level.

Today, Kasteel Vaalsbroek houses a hotel with a wellness and fitness area. The core of the castle is a white-plastered central building with a monumental staircase, flanked by two-story side wings. The estate is surrounded by an English landscape park with ponds and old trees. The historic water mill has been converted into a gourmet restaurant.
