Macea Castle

Csernovics Castle, a historic palace, is located in the Romanian village of Macea and is characterized by its long construction history and a once impressive dendrological park.
History+
The Csernovics family acquired the Matscha area after the Peace of Passarowitz in 1718. Construction of the castle began in 1820 and spanned 25 years. Peter Csernovics, one of the lords of the castle, enriched the park with exotic plants such as Ginkgo Biloba and plane trees after a trip to the Orient. Between 1862 and 1866, Tiberiu Karoli took over the estate and added the northern wing, giving it its current appearance. Karoli also enlarged the park from 10 to 58 hectares and had a swimming pool, a tennis court, and avenues created under the direction of Josef Prohaska from Jimbolia. From 1939 to 1948, Adam Iancu was the owner. From 1945 onwards, the park fell into disrepair, but in 1968, 20 hectares were designated as a dendrological park, and conservation measures were initiated. Since 1960, the park has been managed by the Vasile Goldiș University of Arad and now houses 2241 plant species.
