Güssing Castle
Güssing Castle is situated on a hill in the municipality of Güssing, below the main Güssing Castle. The single-story historic building with a gabled roof and an extension in the northern part is not to be confused with Batthyány Castle, also owned by the Batthyány family, in the same location.
King Louis II subsequently transferred Güssing Castle to the Hungarian nobleman Franz Batthyány and his nephew Christoph as a reward for their victory over a Turkish army at Jaice. The family had the castle expanded into an extensive fortress in the 16th and 17th centuries due to the looming threat from the East. Part of the overall complex was the 17th-century castle with a 19th-century facade. It formerly served as the seat of the Güssing district administration and is now used for residential and commercial purposes.
