As early as the year 1000, a wooden fortification likely existed here. In 1289, the place Stegraifebach was first mentioned. The defensive structure of the Güssing Counts, to whom Stegersbach then belonged, was conquered and destroyed by Duke Albrecht I during the Güssing Feud.
