History+

The current St. James' Cathedral was constructed between 1898 and 1900 and consecrated in October 1900. Initially planned as a filial church, it was elevated to a parish church by Cardinal Adolf Bertram in 1918. After World War II, in March 1947, Görlitz became the exile seat of the Breslau Metropolitan Chapter, and St. James' functioned as the episcopal church for the Görlitz-Cottbus diocesan area. This area was elevated to an Apostolic Administration in 1972, and the church received the title of Pro-Cathedral. With the re-establishment of the Diocese of Görlitz in 1994, St. James' Church was elevated to the official cathedral.
