Exeter Cathedral

Church

Exeter Cathedral of St. Peter, located in Devon, is a prominent example of English ecclesiastical architecture. It has a blend of Norman-Romanesque and Gothic elements and houses the world's longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling.

History+

The cathedral's origins trace back to 1112, when construction began in the Norman-Romanesque style. From this early period, the outer walls of the nave and the two massive, square towers, unusually serving as transepts, are still preserved. This solution was adopted after previously erected crossing towers had collapsed. A Gothic reconstruction commenced in 1224, starting with the low Lady Chapel. Around 1280/90, the retrochoir and nave were built to the dimensions of the Romanesque predecessor. Concurrently, the Chapter House was added to the south transept.
