The Cathedral of Béziers, an imposing sacred building, majestically perches on a rock in the western part of medieval Béziers. History+
The history of the site dates back to Roman times when a temple dedicated to Augustus and Livia stood here. A Christian structure is mentioned in the 8th century, which later gave way to a Romanesque church. However, this was completely destroyed by fire during the Albigensian Crusade in the Massacre of Béziers on July 22, 1209. Reconstruction began in the mid-13th century and, due to the dimensions of the new building, partially included an old cemetery. Until the dissolution of the Diocese of Béziers in 1802, which merged with the Diocese of Montpellier, the cathedral served as the bishop's church.
