Lincoln Cathedral

The cathedral's origins trace back to 1072, when William the Conqueror appointed his companion Remigius of Fécamp as bishop. Construction concluded in 1092, shortly before Remigius's death. A major fire in 1137 or 1139 necessitated rebuilding under Bishop Alexander, who shaped the Romanesque west façade. Following a severe earthquake in 1185, which extensively damaged the cathedral, a comprehensive reconstruction began under Bishop St. Hugh of Lincoln, starting in 1192 and completed in 1235. During this period, the Angel Choir and characteristic vaults were created. The central tower, which collapsed in 1239, was rebuilt and, around 1307-11, received its current upper storey and spire, making the cathedral the world's tallest building until 1549. A storm in 1549 destroyed this spire, leaving the tower with its present flat top.
