Metz Cathedral

The cathedral's history dates back to the 3rd century when Metz became an episcopal see. A shrine dedicated to Saint Stephen is said to have been the only building in the city to escape looting by the Huns in 451. In the late 8th century, Pippin the Younger supported Bishop Chrodegang in expanding this shrine. Between 965 and 984, Bishop Dietrich I, with imperial aid, initiated the conversion into a Romanesque basilica, consecrated in 1040. Due to its location on the banks of the Moselle, the basilica had to be unusually oriented north-northeast. Around 1220, construction of the current Gothic cathedral began on the foundations of the previous building. The nave and towers were erected by 1380, and the vault was completed. The cathedral was finished in 1520. After a fire in 1877, the cathedral underwent extensive remodeling in the late 19th century, resulting in a Neo-Gothic west portal. In the 20th century, some stained glass windows by Marc Chagall and Jacques Villon were added.

The Cathedral of Metz is located in the city of Metz, in the Moselle department of the Lorraine region, France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 198 meters above sea level.

The cathedral is open to visitors and continues to serve as the episcopal church of the Diocese of Metz. It is a classified historical monument and is protected as such.
