Dresden Cathedral
The Catholic Court Church in Dresden serves today as the cathedral of the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen. It shapes the cityscape of the Old Town on the banks of the Elbe and is directly connected to the Residenzschloss by a passage.
History+
Under Elector Friedrich August II of Saxony, the Catholic Court Church was built between 1739 and 1755 according to plans by Gaetano Chiaveri. It was consecrated to the Most Holy Trinity. During the air raids in February 1945, the building suffered severe damage, with the roof and vaults collapsing. Reconstruction continued until 1965, and traces of the destruction are still visible today in the varying stone colors of the facade. In 1980, the Court Church was elevated to the cathedral of the Diocese of Dresden-Meissen after the bishop's seat was moved from Bautzen to Dresden.
