Kloster Oberalteich - Abbey church

The origins of Oberaltaich Abbey date back to approximately 1102, with the consecration of the first church building, a three-aisled Romanesque basilica, in 1129. In the late Middle Ages, the church was expanded with a double-tower facade to the west; the north tower was begun in 1424, and the south tower was started in 1475 but never completed. Under Abbot Johann Asperger (1438–1463), the church underwent a redesign. At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War, in 1621, the medieval monastic church was demolished and rebuilt between 1622 and 1630 under Abbot Veit Höser, reusing the two western towers. The consecration in 1630 took place in the presence of Emperor Ferdinand II and Elector Maximilian I. Despite being plundered and devastated by Swedish troops in 1632, the church underwent extensive Baroque renovation under Abbot Dominicus Perger starting in 1726, which was completed by 1730 with new frescoes by Joseph Anton Merz. Since the secularization of the abbey in 1803, the former monastic church has served as the local parish church.

The church is situated in Oberaltaich, a district of the municipality of Bogen, in the Lower Bavarian district of Straubing-Bogen in Bavaria, Germany.

Today, the former abbey church serves as the Roman Catholic Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul. Its Baroque appearance, with galleries and unique chapel annexes, shapes the local landscape. The rich interior, including the high altar from 1693 and the fresco cycles depicting the history of the abbey and theological themes, are testaments to its long history and artistic significance.
