History+

The origins of the estate date back to 1448 when it came into the possession of the Stirling family. The original manor house was built in the 16th century. The Stirlings were supporters of the Jacobite risings in the 18th century. The current building was constructed in 1760. A redesign of the house and its surrounding grounds began in 1847 under Sir William Stirling Maxwell, who inherited the estate.
