The Kemenate Orlamünde is the last remaining building of a castle complex dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. It is located above the Saale Valley in Thuringia and was the core structure of the fortification. It is depicted on the Ebstorf World Map from around 1300, making it the only Thuringian castle on this map.

History+

The castle was first mentioned in a parish document from 1194, which refers to older sources predating 1067. At that time, the complex was owned by Count Otto I of Weimar. The Kemenate itself was a broad residential tower that blocked the entire ridge and protected the main attack side. Its austere construction with narrow light slits and an elevated entrance at 9.5 meters height suggests Southern Italian influences.
