History+
The origins of Kilwaughter Castle date back to the 17th century. At that time, the Agnew family erected an initial building on lands they had received from King James VI. This structure had four stories and was equipped with corner towers. In 1803, the current castle was rebuilt under the direction of architect John Nash for the Agnew family, incorporating parts of the older complex. A notable episode in the family history was the return of Squire Agnew's daughter, who had married a count in Italy and returned to Kilwaughter in 1897 as Countess Balzani.
