Kinbane Castle
The ruin of Kinbane Castle is perched on a striking, narrow limestone headland on the coast of Northern Ireland, near the town of Ballycastle. Its name, meaning 'White Head', refers to the bright limestone of its foundation, making it a prominent landmark.
History+
Kinbane Castle was constructed in 1547 by Colla MacDonnell, brother of Sorley Boy MacDonnell. As early as 1551, the castle faced a siege by English troops under Lord Deputy Sir James Croft. Just four years later, in 1555, the complex was partially destroyed by cannon fire during another siege. After its reconstruction, Colla MacDonnell died in the castle in 1558. Kinbane Castle was later transferred to Owen Macián Dubh MacAllister as recognition for his services and loyalty to the MacDonnell Clan; he fell in battle in 1571. The castle remained in the possession of the descendants of the MacAllisters of Kenbane until the 18th century.
