Kirche Leubnitz-Neuostra

The exact origin of the first church in Leubnitz is unknown, but a missionary church from the 10th century is presumed, as the location was on an important trade route. The oldest preserved part is the tower, documented in 1170 and of Romanesque origin. Its massive construction with 1.40-meter thick walls and a high-level access point suggests a former defensive function. In 1437, ground-level access to the nave was created, and an altar was consecrated. The nave received its late Gothic form during this period, and around 1511, the choir was added. After a lightning strike in 1536, which damaged the tower, the community undertook its reconstruction. The Reformation led to the introduction of the Protestant faith in 1539. After the Thirty Years' War, extensive construction began: from 1666, galleries were installed and a wooden panel ceiling was added, which was painted by Gottfried Lucas between 1671 and 1673. Further alterations followed in the 18th century, including a Baroque extension in the northeast (1720-1721) and the bridal hall in the northwest. A comprehensive restoration took place from 1874 to 1889, during which, among other things, the east gable was simplified. In the 20th century, cracks were discovered in the masonry; their cause – a swelling marl-marl decay beneath the foundation – was only clarified in 2002 and resolved with drainage. A ten-year restoration from 1968 to 1978 stabilized the structure and restored its historical furnishings.
