Church of Saint John the Baptist
The Church of St. John the Baptist in Nessebar, Bulgaria, is a cruciform domed church dating from the 11th century. It is one of the best-preserved places of worship in the historic city.
History+
The structure was built in the 11th century and is characterized by its cruciform layout. Two cylindrical vaults intersect at the center, where four pillars support the dome. The exterior walls are made of undressed stone and pebbles, which were probably smoothly plastered at one time. Inside, frescoes from the 14th century and later murals from the 16th and 17th centuries are preserved, including faded portraits of donors and contemporaries.
