Klosterruine Heiligenberg (Jugenheim)

The foundation of the monastery is dated to no later than the mid-13th century and was carried out by the Lords of Bickenbach, who established their dominion in this region. A document from 1413 assigns the nunnery to the Franciscan order, specifically the Poor Clares. It is believed that Gottfried von Bickenbach and his wife Agnes, a Wildgräfin zu Dhaun, initiated the foundation in the second quarter of the 13th century, possibly utilizing an already existing church from the late 10th or early 11th century. After 1413, the monastery was transferred to the Imperial Abbey of Lorsch and is documented until about 1550. In the course of the Reformation, it was secularized around 1556 and probably continued as part of the Lorsch domain. By the latest during the Thirty Years' War, the complex became a ruin. In 1831, Grand Duchess Wilhelmine of Hesse and by Rhine initiated a partial reconstruction, integrating the historical wall remains into a romantic ruin.

The monastery ruin is situated on the 213-meter-high Heiligenberg, approximately 13 kilometers south of Darmstadt. It is located about 240 meters west of Heiligenberg Castle and approximately 90 meters in elevation above Jugenheim. The mountain spur offers a wide view of the Rhine plain and is framed by the Stettbach Valley to the north and the Balkhäuser Valley to the south.

The current complex presents itself as a romantic ruin, designed in the 19th century incorporating historical wall remains. It is part of the Heiligenberg complex and a protected cultural monument.
