The former Poor Clares' Monastery in Neuss, North Rhine-Westphalia, was a significant religious institution of the Order of Saint Clare. Although the monastery's above-ground buildings have disappeared over time, historical documents attest to its long history and its role in the region.

History+

The establishment of the monastery in Neuss was made possible in 1283 through a foundation by the widow Wendelmund von Kothausen and her sons. Archbishop Siegfried von Westerburg of Cologne officially confirmed the erection of this nunnery of the Order of Saint Clare on October 16, 1283. In 1716, a new construction of the monastic complex began on what is now Klarissenstraße. The institution existed until its secularization. Documents such as Karl Tücking's 1896 register of deeds, "Urkunden und Akten aus dem Archiv der Klarissen zu Neuss," provide insights into the monastery's history, including charters for endowments and visitations. A visitation protocol from 1788 is also preserved and is now located in the Hauptstaatsarchiv Düsseldorf. In 1795, the monastery's land holdings comprised 146 Morgen.
