Pyhrn Castle

First mentioned in 1265 in a land register of the Styrian territorial princes, the structure initially served as the seat for territorial officials, known as Pfleger. In the early 15th century, around 1418, the tower came into the possession of the Spital am Pyhrn monastery. A transformation occurred in 1455 when the monastery was commissioned to erect a pass fortification, a so-called Klause, at this location. For this purpose, the tower underwent reconstruction: loopholes for firearms were added, and the upper floor, which once had a platform with battlements, was expanded. These measures transformed the tower into a battery tower, securing control over the pass road.
