Adersleben Abbey

The origins of Adersleben Monastery date back to the 13th century. Around 1260, a Cistercian convent was established here, initially affiliated with the Burchardi Monastery in Halberstadt. The official consecration by Bishop Volrad von Kranichfeld took place in December 1260, with the existing village church serving as the monastery church. In 1270, the local church was fully incorporated into the monastery. Over the following centuries, the monastery experienced a turbulent history, marked by looting during the Peasants' War in 1525 and the Schmalkaldic War in 1547. The Thirty Years' War also left its mark when the complex was seized by Swedish troops in 1631. Following the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, reconstruction began, which included the construction of the present church between 1752 and 1757. Secularization in 1809 ended the monastery's existence; its buildings subsequently passed into private ownership, while the church remained for the Catholic community.

Adersleben Monastery is located in the village of Adersleben, part of Wegeleben, in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt. Its geographical elevation is approximately 98 meters above sea level.

Today, only a few remnants of the original monastery buildings survive. However, the former monastery church continues to serve as a Catholic filial church of the St. Burchard parish in Halberstadt. Inside the church, visitors can see a Baroque high altar from 1794, two side altars, and an organ from 1755.
