Aldersbach Abbey

The origins of Aldersbach Abbey trace back to the mid-8th century, when a church in Aldersbach was first mentioned. Around 1120, an Augustinian canonry was established here, operating under the patronage of Bishop Otto I of Bamberg. In 1146, the canonry was taken over by Cistercian monks from Ebrach Abbey and consecrated to the Holy Mary, having previously been dedicated to Saint Peter. The monastery flourished in the 13th and 14th centuries, boasting a significant scriptorium and a goldsmith's workshop. After a crisis in the 14th century, it recovered and experienced a renewed period of prosperity from the Counter-Reformation onwards. The abbots of Aldersbach frequently held the office of Vicar General of the Bavarian ecclesiastical province. In the 18th century, Abbot Malachias Niederhofer established a philosophical-theological house academy, and the monastery was renowned for its musical cultivation. After nearly seven centuries, Aldersbach Abbey was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization.
