Church

The Altendorf Monastery, also known as St. Maria im Tal, was a significant Cistercian nunnery that existed from 1238 to 1526. Initially founded in Woffleben, it was later relocated to Nordhausen in Thuringia, where it shaped the religious landscape.

History+

The monastery was founded in 1238 by Dietrich I von Hohnstein. He established a community of sisters in Bischoferode, a now-vanished village located between Woffleben, Cleysingen, and Appenrode. From 1276, this community was documented in papal records as the Cistercian Nunnery of Nikolausberg in the Diocese of Mainz. In 1294, the convent relocated to the village of Altendorf, which at the time was situated outside the gates of Nordhausen and is now a city district. There, the community utilized the Church of St. Maria im Tal as their monastery church. Altendorf Monastery was in close proximity to the Cistercian Nunnery of Frauenberg or Neuwerk St. Maria. The monastery was dissolved in 1526 as part of the Reformation. While only minor wall remnants remain in Woffleben, the Church of St. Maria im Tal in Nordhausen continues to bear witness to the former monastic complex.

Location+

The former Altendorf Monastery was situated in Nordhausen, a city in Thuringia, Germany.
