Amelungsborn Abbey

The foundation of Amelungsborn Abbey occurred between 1123 and 1135. Monks from the Cistercian monastery of Altenkamp in the Lower Rhine region settled on the land donated by Count Siegfried IV of Northeim-Boyneburg and Homburg. The monastery's name derives from a spring within the abbey grounds, the 'Born' (well) of Amelung. The consecration of the monastery took place in 1135 by Bishop Bernhard I of Hildesheim. The abbey developed successfully economically and founded daughter monasteries, including Mariental (1138), Riddagshausen (1145), and Doberan (1171/1176). Amelungsborn became one of the wealthiest monasteries in the Welf territory and was closely linked to the East German colonization movement. Around 1280, approximately 50 choir monks and 90 lay brothers lived there. The dissolution of the monastery occurred in 1568 during the secularization. The patronage of the monastery was Mary, John, and Pancras.

Amelungsborn Abbey is located in Holzminden, in the federal state of Lower Saxony, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 211 meters above sea level.

Today, the former Cistercian monastery operates as an Evangelical monastery. The historic abbey church of St. Marien continues to serve as a parish church.
