Anrode Abbey

Anrode Monastery, a former Cistercian abbey, is located in the municipality of Dingelstädt in the Eichsfeld district of Thuringia, Germany. It stands as a significant testament to monastic culture and history in the region.
History+
The foundation of Anrode Monastery occurred in the first half of the 13th century, likely around 1267, by Cistercian nuns from Beuren Abbey. The monastery was built on lands owned by a councilor from Mühlhausen, situated at the edge of the then-existing village of Anrode. In 1311, Anrode Monastery contributed to the settlement of Worbis Monastery. Despite destruction during the Peasants' War in 1525 and the Thirty Years' War, the monastery managed to maintain its possessions and experienced a final flourishing in the 17th century. However, a complete recovery in the subsequent period did not materialize. In the course of secularization, the nunnery of Anrode was dissolved in 1810. The patron saints of the monastery were Mary, All Saints, John the Evangelist, and Andrew.

Anrode Monastery is situated in the Unstrut-Hainich region of Thuringia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 333 meters above sea level. It lies west of Bickenriede on a narrow mountain spur, bordered by the Luhne to the north and the Gießegraben to the south.

Following its secularization, the monastery was sold in 1811, and its buildings and lands were used for agriculture. Later, it housed a flax retting plant and a rope factory. Since its purchase by the municipality of Bickenriede in 1993, the monastery has been undergoing extensive restoration.
