Au Abbey
The Au/Äu Monastery is a former monastery of the Augustinian Canons and now a Franciscan convent near Gars am Inn in Bavaria in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.
Around 780, a cell was founded by the monks Baldung (Balduin) and Hrodbert. In 1122, an Augustinian canonry was founded by Archbishop Konrad I of Salzburg, dedicated to Saint Mary, St. Felicitas, and St. Vitalis.
The monastery was dissolved in 1803 during the secularization. The culturally and historically significant church, designed by Domenico Christoforo Zuccalli, became a parish church, and the monastery came into the private possession of Joseph Ernst von Koch-Sternfeld. 605 books from the monastery library were given to the University Library in Landshut. In 1853, Dillinger Franciscans from Dillingen an der Donau took over the monastery buildings. In 1854, the independent Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Au am Inn was founded. With a brief interruption during the "Third Reich," the Franciscans dedicated themselves to education and schooling. A special needs school founded in 1970 developed into a therapeutic educational institution with a special school, day-care center, and home for mentally and physically disabled children. The sisters have also founded branches in Brazil.
Organ+
The organ work in the historic 18th-century organ case was built in 2004 by the Swiss organ building company Mathis (Näfels). The purely mechanical slider chest instrument has 21 stops (approx. 2,000 pipes) on two manuals and pedal. The disposition corresponds to a baroque sound aesthetic.
Next to the monastery is a typical beer garden. The monastery church and its surroundings are a popular excursion destination. In mid-November, a large pottery market with approximately 50 exhibitors takes place annually.
Au Monastery is the birthplace of the educator Therese Binsteiner-Bernhart. The Augustinian monk and composer of the Advent hymn "Tauet Himmel den Gerechten" (Heaven, let the Just One rain down), Norbert Hauner, also comes from Au am Inn. In his honor, a memorial cross was erected in 2007 near the Stampfl inn.
