The monastery, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, was founded in 1686 by Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria. It was initially inhabited by Augustinian Canons. During the secularization in 1803, the monastic community was dissolved. Towards the end of the 19th century, in September 1896, Discalced Carmelites moved into the building, which had previously served as a collegiate rectory. The canonical establishment of the enclosure took place on November 22, 1896. The revival of monastic life at this site was significantly supported by the Carmelite monasteries of Mayerling and Vienna-Baumgarten, as well as by Prince Emilio Öttingen-Spielberg and his wife Berta.
