Banz Abbey

Monastery operation

In Bad Staffelstein-Banz in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels is Kloster Banz, a former Benedictine abbey. It is an example of South German-Bohemian Baroque and shapes the Upper Main Valley.

History+

The monastery was founded around 1070 by Countess Alberada of Schweinfurt and her husband Hermann of Habsberg-Kastl. Until its secularization in 1803, it was the oldest monastery in the Upper Main region. In the Middle Ages, the nearby Stachilize Castle also belonged to the monastery's possessions, having been granted to it in 1127. A unique feature until 1575 was that only noble monks were admitted.
