Kloster Bardel

The founding of Bardel Monastery in 1922 by the Northeast Brazilian Franciscan Province of St. Anthony is closely linked to the eventful history of the Catholic Church in Brazil. In the 19th century, the church there experienced a period of suppression, which led to a drastic reduction in priestly and religious communities. After the end of this persecution in 1889 and the subsequent restoration of the Brazilian Franciscan provinces by German Franciscans, the desire arose to establish their own college in Germany. This was intended to train new recruits for the mission in Brazil. After delays due to the First World War, the college in Bardel was opened in 1923 with 21 students. Funding came exclusively from Brazil. During the Nazi era, the monastery faced severe trials, which led to the closure of the school and the expulsion of the friars in 1939.

Bardel Monastery is located in the Lower Saxony region, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 38 meters above sea level.

Today, three Franciscans still live in Bardel Monastery. The associated St. Antonius Missionary Grammar School – International College of Science and the Arts has been run by the School Foundation of the Diocese of Osnabrück since the early 2000s. It offers bilingual teaching and the opportunity to obtain the English Advanced Level in addition to the German Abitur.
