Barsinghausen Abbey

Kloster Barsinghausen, a historic women's convent, is situated in the Hanover Region of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is one of the five Calenberg convents and is notable for its long history and its current role as an evangelical women's foundation.
History+
The founding of Kloster Barsinghausen occurred between 1185 and 1193 by Count Wedekind von Schwalenberg, initially as a double monastery for Augustinian canons and canonesses. However, from 1229 onwards, it was exclusively inhabited by nuns. It is the oldest of the five women's convents in the former Principality of Calenberg. In 1543, the Reformation was introduced, and the convent was placed under the administration of the Klosterkammer Hannover. The convent church, St. Marien, has since also served as the parish church. After significant damage during the Thirty Years' War, the convent was rebuilt between 1700 and 1704. Since 1996, the sisters of the Evangelical Community Kloster Barsinghausen have continued the monastic rhythm of "pray and work," as part of the Diakonische Schwesternschaft Wolmirstedt e. V. Henrike Wahl has been the abbess of the convent since 2021.

The palatial convent buildings, constructed between 1700 and 1704, are arranged to the south of the convent church. The single-story wings form a quadrangle, enclosing the church on one side. The convent is surrounded by a rubble stone wall and features a draw well and a baroque sundial in its garden. Since 2013, the convent has housed Haus Inspiratio, a joint facility of several regional churches, offering pastors and staff a place for rest and burnout prevention.
