Batoshevo Monastery (The Nativity of the Virgin)

The monastery's origins date back to the mid-13th century when it was built during the reign of Tsar Mihail II Asen (1246-1256). However, after the Ottoman conquest of Bulgaria, the monastery fell into disrepair. A revival only occurred in 1809 when the monk Isay settled near the ruins. The construction of the new monastery began in 1835, with the main church “Sveta Bogoroditsa” (Holy Virgin Mary) being erected in 1836 under the direction of master builder Konstantin from Peshtera. Residential buildings were also constructed at the same time. Following this reconstruction, the Batoshevo Monastery developed into a center of intellect and resistance. During the April Uprising of 1876, it was attacked and set on fire by a band of robbers, with the north and west wings and parts of the church falling victim to the flames. The destroyed areas were rebuilt as early as 1878.

The Batoshevo Uspenie Bogorodichno Monastery is located in the village of Batoshevo, which belongs to the Sevlievo district in the Gabrovo region of Bulgaria. It is situated at an elevation of approx. 587 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the monastery today. It is an active site and offers insights into its rich history and architecture. The carved wooden iconostasis, with its floral ornaments and 12 images depicting creation motifs, is considered an outstanding work of the Troyan carving school. Icons such as “St. Archangel Michael” and “St. Virgin Mary” can also be seen in the church. The frescoes in the open narthex also represent a remarkable work of art. The monastery is recognized as a cultural monument of architectural history.
