Baumburg Abbey

The monastery of St. Margareth in Baumburg was founded around 1107/09 by Count Berengar I of Sulzbach, fulfilling a vow made after the death of his wife Adelheid von Megling-Frontenhausen in 1105. Berengar appointed Eberwin as provost and assigned him Augustinian canons from Rottenbuch, who had previously founded the monastery of Berchtesgaden. Berchtesgaden's estates were also transferred to Baumburg. However, Eberwin returned to Berchtesgaden around 1116 to lead it again as an independent monastery. The new provost Gottschalk (approx. 1120–1163) did not accept the loss of the Berchtesgaden estates and challenged the separation. Only an arbitration ruling by Archbishop Konrad I of Salzburg in 1136 and a papal confirmation in 1142 secured Berchtesgaden's independence. During Gottschalk's tenure, a Nikolaus church was consecrated in 1129, and the Romanesque Basilica of St. Margareth was built by 1156, where the foundress Adelheid was buried.
