Kloster Berching

retirement home

The former Berching Monastery in Bavaria, a protected architectural monument, represents a significant historical site. Originally founded as a Capuchin hospice, it was later taken over by Franciscans and shaped the religious and social life of the region for centuries.

History+

The foundation of Berching Monastery dates back to 1721, when the wine merchant and mayor Johann Georg Pettenkhover established a Capuchin hospice. In 1738, this institution was handed over to the Franciscans and expanded with a monastery church named St. Trinitas. Although the Franciscans had to leave the monastery on September 1, 1806, due to the secularization in Bavaria, its continued existence as a Franciscan hospice was approved by the royal government. Thus, four Franciscan friars from Beilngries returned as early as December 22, 1806. The convent was reinforced in 1818 by the last two friars from the dissolved Franciscan monastery of Ellingen. In the final days of the war in 1945, the monastery served as a Red Cross auxiliary hospital. In 1969, the Franciscans sold the monastery to the Caritas Association of the Diocese of Eichstätt, which converted it into a nursing home.

Berching Monastery is located in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 388 m above sea level.
