Bergen Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Bergen dates back to 976, established by Wiltrud von Bergen, the widow of Duke Berthold of Bavaria. During the Reformation, the monastery's property was confiscated in 1542 by Ottheinrich von Pfalz-Neuburg. Following the re-Catholicization of the region, Wolfgang Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg transferred the monastery to the Jesuits from Neuburg in 1635. They used parts of the monastic buildings as construction material for their seminary in Neuburg an der Donau. The original Romanesque hall church from the 11th century was replaced in 1755 by a new building in the Rococo style. The ceiling painting of the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche (Holy Cross Church) is by Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner. Remains of the original church, as well as the tower, which was rebuilt in 1799, are still preserved.
