Bernried Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Bernried took place in 1121 as an Augustinian Canons Regular collegiate church, dedicated to Saint Martin. Count Otto I of Dachau-Valley and his wife Adelheid of Weilheim founded the complex, whose possessions in the late Middle Ages extended into the Alpine region. Under Provost Mansuetus Resch, the collegiate church experienced a flourishing period in the 18th century, during which the buildings were restored and science and culture were promoted. The secularization in 1803 led to the dissolution of the monastery. After its acquisition by Ignaz Graf Arco in 1810 and later by August Freiherr von Wendland in 1852, parts of the monastic complex were demolished, and the south wing was converted into a castle in the Neo-Renaissance style. In 1949, monastic life returned to Bernried when Missionary Benedictine Sisters acquired the complex and established a domestic science school there. Since 1972, the house has served as an educational center for ecclesiastical adult education.

Kloster Bernried is located in the municipality of Bernried am Starnberger See in the Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria. The complex is idyllically situated within Bernried Park directly on the lake at an altitude of approximately 604 meters above sea level.

Today, Kloster Bernried houses the St. Martin educational center, an institution for ecclesiastical adult education, seminars, and conferences. Part of the buildings continues to be used by the Missionary Benedictine Sisters as a monastery. The entire complex is a protected monument.
