Beuren Abbey

Kloster Beuren, a former Cistercian abbey for women, is situated in the Eichsfeld region of Thuringia, Germany. It stands as a historically significant structure, having undergone a long history from its founding in the 13th century to its secularization in the early 19th century.
History+
The origins of Kloster Beuren date back to the year 1200, when it was established as a Cistercian women's abbey. The consecration of the monastery honored the Apostles Andrew and Mary. The foundation was primarily initiated by Konrad von Bodenstein, who later served as the first provost of the monastery. He received support from papal legates and the abbots of Walkenried and Reifenstein monasteries. The first nuns came from the Cistercian monastery in Wöltingerode. In 1208, Pope Innocent III officially recognized the monastery's foundation. Over the centuries, the monastery experienced significant economic development through land purchases and donations, which enabled the establishment of several daughter monasteries, including Breitenbich, Anrode, Teistungenburg, Marksußra, and Worbis. In the 13th century, the monastery was placed under the protection of Landgrave Heinrich of Thuringia and later directly under papal protection, which secured extensive privileges for it. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the complex suffered severe damage from looting and arson. Following the death of the last nuns in 1555, parts of the monastic estate were sold. However, in 1617, Cistercian nuns from Teistungenburg repopulated the monastery, repurchasing the monastery and significant portions of its property. The final dissolution and secularization of the monastery occurred in 1810.
