Bildhausen Abbey

The monastery was founded in 1156 by Hermann von Stahleck, Count Palatine of the Rhine. Two years later, on February 12, 1158, it was settled by monks from Ebrach Monastery. Bildhausen experienced its first period of flourishing until 1525, marked by acquisitions and donations. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the abbey was plundered and devastated by the Bildhausen mob. Further damage to buildings and assets followed during the Second Margrave War between 1552 and 1555. The Thirty Years' War also impacted the monastery, undoing earlier restoration attempts. Reconstruction took place in the 17th and 18th centuries, giving the monastery its current appearance.
