Bonlanden Abbey
Bonlanden Abbey is the motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady (OSF) in Bonlanden, a district of the municipality of Berkheim an der Iller in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia.
In 1855, the foundation stone for the monastery building in Bonlanden was laid at the suggestion of Father Faustin Mennel, who came from Hüttenweiler near Wangen im Allgäu. Already in November 1855, the first candidates entered the new monastery of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. Dillingen Franciscans, whose roots date back to 1241, were among the co-founders. In 1859, the independence of the monastery was ecclesiastically recognized. The monastery is the motherhouse of forty branches worldwide, with a focus on South America, especially Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.
Activities+
The Franciscan Sisters of Bonlanden maintain a conference center and a nativity scene museum in the monastery. They also operate the Catholic Free Girls' School St. Hildegard in Ulm, the Franziskusheim, an elderly care center, and a daycare center in Villingen-Schwenningen. In addition, the monastery initiates social and ecclesiastical work in South America, such as schools for children from all social classes, the management of literacy courses for adults, and work with young people in daycare centers, homes, and slums.
Nativity Scene Exhibition+
Since January 6, 2006, a year-round nativity scene exhibition has been located in the old farm building. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a simultaneous nativity scene with 245 figures and 124 animal representations on 160 square meters of floor space. Further nativity scenes from all over the world and from the sphere of influence of the convent sisters complete the exhibition.
