Residential complex
Brandenburg, Sief

Brandenburg Monastery, a former Cross-Bearer monastery, was founded in 1477 and was located near the present-day city of Aachen, in the Walloon part of Germany, close to the border with Liège. It was the only establishment of the Order of the Holy Cross in the then Duchy of Limburg.
History+
The origins of Brandenburg Monastery date back to 1441, when Johannes von Eynatten acquired the Brandenburg estate. A few years later, in 1444, he had a residential tower built and surrounded the property with a moat. In 1477, Ägidius von Brandenburg, whose marriage remained childless, transferred the estate to the Order of the Cross-Bearers so that they could establish a monastery for twelve monks there. He himself initiated the construction of a church, which was consecrated in 1485. The monastery, which belonged to the Diocese of Liège, housed relics of Saint Anthony and Saint Odilia of Cologne and was a destination for pilgrims. In the 16th century, the monastery was granted the right to build a water mill. A fire in 1543 severely damaged parts of the complex, which were subsequently rebuilt. In the course of the Josephine Secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1784 and began to fall into disrepair. The church and other buildings were later sold and used for agricultural purposes. Today, the preserved buildings are listed as historical monuments.
